JEDEC Flash Storage Summits Draw Strong Industry Response in Korea and Taiwan

Over 500 Attendees Tune into the Future of Flash Memory and Upcoming JEDEC Standards

ARLINGTON, Va., USA – OCTOBER 8, 2009 – JEDEC’s Flash Storage Summits, focusing on the future of flash memory, held in Seoul, Korea and Hsinchu, Taiwan last week, attracted a combined audience of more than 500 engineers and product designers. The events focused on the latest proposals and upcoming standards for flash memory, the predominant storage medium in consumer electronics today. Speakers and workshop instructors included representatives from well-known industry companies including Agilent, IDT, INDILINX, Nokia, PSC, Qualcomm, Samsung, SandForce and Spansion.

The two-city tour began in Seoul on September 29, where attendees packed the main ballroom at the JW Marriott for an all-day event. Co-sponsored by the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA) and the Korea Semiconductor Standards Association (KSSA), the Summit received enthusiastic feedback on the event with more than 90% percent of surveyed attendees rating the event as worthwhile. Mr. J.C. Yang, President and CEO of KSIA; Mr. Y.T. Kim, Chairman of KSA; and Mr. Mian Quddus, JEDEC Chairman delivered introductory remarks.

The second JEDEC event, on October 1 in Hsinchu, found a high degree of interest in solid state drive standards when hundreds convened at the Ambassador Hotel. This second Asian summit was cosponsored by the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs (IDB), the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA), and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). Dr. An-Yeu Wu, Director of the Semiconductor Industry Promotion Office of the IDB, welcomed attendees to the event.

In evaluation responses, conference-goers expressed appreciation at having the opportunity to interact directly with JEDEC member company representatives involved in standards development. “The Summit gave me a lot to think about, especially with regard to future markets for SSDs,” commented one summit attendee.

“JEDEC is very pleased with the industry response to our Flash Storage Summits,” said Mian Quddus, Chairman, JEDEC Board of Directors. “Flash memory is a fast-growing, diverse storage solution with a wide range of applications, and I’m enthusiastic about its future including upcoming standards for this technology. I hope the Summits will inspire more companies to choose to join in standards development at JEDEC.”

Copies of the presentations from the events are available for a small fee. For more information contact Angie Steigleman at angies@jedec.org.
