ARLINGTON, Va., USA – JUNE 15, 2009 – JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global
leader in standards development for the microelectronics industry, today announced that Roger Isaac
of Silicon Image, Inc. and Karin Werder of Research In Motion were honored with JEDEC Chairman’s Awards. Presented at a quarterly meeting in Montreal, Canada on June 3, 2009 by committee
chairman Mian Quddus, these awards honor member volunteers who have made outstanding
contributions to their respective committees.
Roger Isaac and Karin Werder both received their awards in recognition of their exceptional
contributions as part of the industry team for the development and promotion of the e•MMC v4.4 and
Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Standards. Mr. Isaac is applauded for his visionary outlook, active
involvement and technical expertise as a past Chairman of the UFS Task Group, a JEDEC working
group dedicated to defining the technical details of the upcoming standard. Ms. Werder’s in-depth
knowledge of the mobile device market in conjunction with her understanding of end user requirements
proved invaluable in the development of e•MMC v4.4.
e•MMC v4.4 was published in April, 2009 as JESD84-A44 MMC Version 4.4, and is available
for free download at www.jedec.org. The new standard offers numerous enhancements over the
previous version of the standard, including a doubling of memory interface performance, flexible
partition management and improved security options.
JEDEC UFS is being designed as a next generation specification that will enable higher
performance and greater efficiencies when flash memory is used in products such as laptops,
smart phones and other consumer electronic devices. Strong industry support is expected for the
UFS standard, which is being developed by principal consumer electronic and cell phone OEMs,
in conjunction with major chip manufacturers.
"The contributions made by Roger Isaac and Karin Werder were essential to the successful
publication of e•MMC v4.4, and are critical to continued progress on the timely development of
UFS," said Mian Quddus, JEDEC Board of Directors Chairman and Chair of JC-64 Committee for
Flash Memory Modules. He added, "JEDEC is grateful for the commitment Roger and Karin and
their companies have made to the development of open industry standards, and is delighted to
present them with Chairman’s Awards."
