ARLINGTON, Va., USA – July 15, 2015 – JEDEC Solid State Technology Association announced today that Frank Chu, Technologist with HGST (@HGSTstorage), a Western Digital company (NASDAQ: WDC), has been presented with a JEDEC Outstanding Leadership Award. This award is presented by the JEDEC Board of Directors to an individual who has combined a leadership role with significant contributions to technology standardization. Mr. Chu’s award was the only recognition given by the JEDEC Board of Directors to an active and contributing JEDEC member this year. Mian Quddus, Howard Sussman and Cecil Ho, representing the JEDEC Board, recently presented Mr. Chu with his award in a ceremony at HGST’s offices in San Jose.
As an expert in interface protocol technology, device drivers and storage devices at HGST, Mr. Chu was chosen for the Outstanding Leadership Award in recognition of his exemplary leadership and many individual contributions that expedited the completion of JESD230: NAND Flash Interface Interoperability Standard (jointly developed by JEDEC and ONFI), and for his role as Chair in focusing and providing direction for the JC-64.8 Subcommittee on solid state drives.
Mr. Chu’s guidance paved the way for rapid progress and ultimately the successful publication of JESD230 by helping committee participants agree on an innovative compromise to resolve technical challenges. JESD230 has benefited the industry by enabling the design of interoperable systems that can support Asynchronous SDR, Synchronous DDR and Toggle DDR NAND flash devices. This interoperability among NAND vendors facilitates the broader use of NAND flash memory in a wide variety of applications.
John Kelly, JEDEC President, said: “I am grateful for Mr. Chu’s dedication to the standards development activities carried out by JEDEC committees, and for the support HGST provides for the development of open industry standards within JEDEC.”
Jorge Campello, senior director of systems architecture and solutions at HGST, said: “HGST is pleased to see that Frank’s leadership and industry contributions are being honored by JEDEC, and we look forward to our continued active participation in the development of JEDEC standards.”
